The answer most likely is probably.
In early January there was news in Rockland country that “Suez and Nyack water companies recently notified Rockland customers about toxic … chemicals in our drinking water sources. What are the health risks?” (See LOHUD article). Residents in Rockland County who had followed NY state water issues, or were new to the subject were “alarmed”. The chemicals in question are PFAS chemicals, commonly known as forever chemicals. A synthetic chemical used for oil and water repellency – they do not break down, they accumulate in food, are passed in breast milk and cause cancer.
Rockland Water Coalition scheduled a public discussion via zoom on the subject on January 7, 2021 that was attended by approximatley 450 people. The information discussed was of concern, not just for Rockland County but also Bergen county as possible contaminted water is being drawn from aquifers that straddle the border. Additionally, the new construction in Upper Saddle River by Toll Brothers will be provided with water by Suez Water.
The Rockland Water Coalition is spearheading a campaign to get Governor Cuomo to take action, and is holding a series of meetings to discuss implications and the way forward – open to the public. The next meeting is tonight – February 8, 2021 at 7pm via zoom. Full information is available on their Facebook page.
Why is this of concern to Upper Saddle River? If the aquifer is contaminated residents may be unknowlingly ingesting these chemicals. Of particualr concern are young children and babies. One noteworthy point in the meeting was the advice to get your well tested. Further information is in the meeting video below.
