Week of August 13th, 2018
Another hectic week is wrapping up, and despite the summer doldrums there has been quite a bit of activity in the Upper Saddle River / Mahwah area on the part of some of the area’s citizen activists as reported on the Citizens For A Better Upper Saddle River Facebook group.
Still complete and utter silence from the administrations of Upper Saddle River and Mahwah over the brown water being pumped and spilled from the Toll Brothers site. It seems that now the Upper Saddle River police won’t turn out for appearances of brown water after being informed that there are things in place to ensure the water is filtered. They probably just don’t have the brown filter in place yet *sarcasm*.
Residents have continued calling various state agencies (NJDEP for starters) to report this brown event and getting very impressive case numbers. Has anyone turned up yet?
There have been speculations and discussion about the recycling program in Upper Saddle River and whether it really is a true recycling program. It is really unclear as to what is going on as the answers from Borough Hall have been enigmatic, at best.
A citizen activist has penned a letter requesting an ordinance banning smart meters in Upper Saddle River that will be presented to the Mayor and Council at the next meeting.
Mahwah residents have been given the green light and are moving ahead with their mayoral recall after it was certified.
Other issues this week also include the ongoing discussion, research and reporting on religious freedom and accommodation following encroachment on the towns of northern Bergen county. Some residents in Upper Saddle River have properties sporting new metal poles on their front easements, which raises more than a few questions – why? were they consulted? are they happy with it? is it legal?
As usual it seems that many of the residents in the communities are in the dark about so many things and the powers that be just don’t help. It makes you wonder why?
To the citizen activists who are leading the way in trying to protect our wonderful communities, thank you! It is a difficult job as there are so very few of you, and there are so very many others who just don’t get involved. If you love your town, your way of life, the safety, the education your children enjoy, the beauty of your surroundings and peace and quiet you have to find your voice. Have a say – whether you agree or not. Just don’t be complacent.
