The backyard deer slaughter in Saddle River has started. Residents still have limited information and are forced to call the town repeatedly to get the information. They aren’t all happy and despite calls lives of humans and pets are being put in danger.
Who would have thought that a location that is a dream to so many can be such a nightmare?
In their own words:
Just got off the phone with the town administrator. They have killed 15-16 deer. Would not give streets they are hunting on but definitely are on larger properties. They have received over 100 letters of approval for hunting on private properties. The hunters are allowed to keep whatever meat they harvest. For free. There is no charge for hunting. I told him that all the meat should have gone to the food banks. No hunter should have been given free food for shooting deer like fish in a barrel. These hunters would pay to hunt on any other property but here they hunt for free. He could not give me a number as to how many hunters there are. That tells me there allowable hunters is fluid to whatever they want. There is no 100% guarantee that you are safe 30 minutes after sunset to 30 minutes before sunrise. They are re-evaluating the cull after 40 confirmed kills. That doesn’t mean they’ll stop at 40. They have carte blanch to kill any coyote they see Because several people went to the town crying that a pack of coyotes ran through their yard. Administrator told me that the killing of fox was not authorized. I told him this resident was armed and would shoot back if someone with a weapon stepped into my yard. And suddenly they get nervous. We’re supposed to be comfortable on our own property with armed strangers walking around but we must be careful with protecting ourselves.
I also reminded him that deer do not respect property lines and in reality, a hunter could enter your property at night to retrieve a deer and you’d never know it.
They aren’t necessarily stopping at 40. And hinted they would do it again next year if they decide they didn’t get enough this year
I was trying to catch a lost dog yesterday evening at sunset and remembered that there were potential hunters around. They are hunting very close to my house. Imagine if these hunters stumble across a lost dog. What would they do? We are not safe. It’s insane.
We are just renting this home here in Saddle River thank god and have only been here for 8 months. There is no way we will be buying a home in Saddle River and I can’t get out of here fast enough! I have posted quite a few post on the Moms of Saddle River about the deer cull and nothing. Over 100 (people) saw it and only 2 people responded with same concerns as me and my family. And one lady who was concerned about her flowers being destroyed 🙄. I have never seen such a lack of concern for children in my life . No matter where you stand…….bottom line is if anyone child, adults, pets can be injured or worse you have to stand with safety 1st. No deer, coyote or fox killing is worth the life of anyone! And how can anyone live not knowing if you go outside are you going to be hit with a bow, if you drive your car will you be shot, walking to your mailbox etc.
Wake up saddle river start putting your children’s safely 1st. you can always plant new flowers you cannot replace your family members!!!
But it seems that in Saddle River the backyard hunt is of more importance than the safety of their children.
What do you think?
