You received your notice that your smart meter is coming.
What now?
You go to your energy providers website and will find information on what to do next. For Orange and Rockland you will find it here. You will have to call them so they can try and talk you out of it and remind you of all the fees associated with not having the smart meter. Then there is a form to fill in and mail to them.
Easy!!
However…..
Just as a side note and update – a resident has made a comment stating the following about opting out of the Smart Meter.
“…be sure you have some form of documentation substantiating your desire to opt out. We completed all of the required forms and submitted online, via mail, fax and email AND STILL received a postcard with a date scheduled for our meter to be changed. We eventually went down to the facility to get our request signed as they claimed they never received our previous requests.”
Maybe this was a fluke, but maybe it wasn’t.
If you choose to opt out, continue to watch your mail, just in case.
And if they call and ask you if you’re ‘sure’ – yes, you are sure. Don’t let them try and convince you of their wonderful benefits if you’ve already said no and have decided.
Please keep us updated on your experience in the comments.

If you are considering opting out read How YOU Can Stop ‘Smart’ Meters on the website Stop Smart Meters! which has some useful information on what to do.
!!!They also stress the importance of sending a certified letter and give examples of what they should contain if you want to opt out, or if the meter is already installed.
It is also noteworthy that they have a list of opt out groups throughout the country. New Jersey isn’t included.
