Meeting tonight May 13, 2021 Village of Airmont Zoning Board of Appeals 8pm – 11pm
From CUPON Airmont
Tomorrow night Thursday May 13th the Zoning Board Of Appeals is having a public hearing for the the following proposed projects:
Mechon L’Horyroa Cemetery 44 Hillside Ave- Proposed 10,200 grave cemetery on 9 of the 19 acres of this property. They owners are asking for the following variances:
Coverage of 9% of the property exceeds the code by 300%
The industry standard of 1,000 graves owe acre is exceeded.
-The proposed cemetery has 20 plots, with the expectation that it will be built at one time, requiring clear cutting to this heavily wooded property The industry standard calls for cemeteries to be built in phases. It has been well established that clear cutting trees does tremendous damage to the surrounding environment. Additionally the consideration of private wells in the vicinity and the aquifer that Rockland and Bergen County’s use is another big issue.
Please note, a cemetery is a legal use for the zoning of this property. The issues are the scope of the project. The coverage is 300% above the zoning limit and clear cutting the trees are what we are hoping to have changed.

Worth noting this will increase the traffic on Hillside. Unclear what water/sewage issues may arise.
Other items on agenda:
-Dunkin Donuts drive thru on Airmont Rd. This proposed project is an improvement to the current setup of the property. The drive thru will be behind the building, the owners have more than enough property to expand in this direction. The changes will help alleviate some of the traffic issues at the intersection. I will be asking that the pedestrian walkway is made as safe as possible with ample signs.
24 S Airmont Rd-This is an 8,000 sq ft home with too much coverage for the size of the 1.06 acre and an irregular shape. In February the ZBA had heard the proposed plans and requested a number of changes to be made in the plans. The updated plans will be presented.
